'The Big Bang': Entertainment line-up taking shape

Friday, October 31st 2014 06:00

Oldham Council is revealing more details of the free family entertainment line-up at ‘The Big Bang’ on Bonfire Night.

A pyrotechnics masterclass from Fantastic Fireworks is again the centrepiece at Oldham Edge on November 5 – all set to hit songs from ITV talent show, The X Factor

This year’s stageshow also boasts a new host and acts to really wow the crowds.

Gates to the event (sponsored by the Oldham Housing Investment Partnership (OHIP) and the NSL Group) will open with a funfair, street entertainment and food stalls from 5pm.

A carnival of colour and sound with spectacular professional performers then gets underway at 6pm when Elliot Eastwick, Revolution 96.2’s popular breakfast show host, makes the short walk from the station’s headquarters to get the party started.

Elliot said: “The Big Bang is going to be a massive event – and I’m really excited about welcoming such a big crowd to Oldham Edge.”

“This is a fantastic night for families that is all about fire safety and fun.

“Why bother with the risk and expense of having your own bonfire when you can come along and watch this amazing fireworks display – and our other brilliant entertainment – all for free?

“There’s no doubt about it: Oldham Edge is the only place to be on Bonfire Night.”

This year The Big Bang has secured a major new attraction in the Gandini Jugglers.

This group brings a magical marriage of virtuoso juggling with some of the most advanced light technology available.

Their unique ‘glow’ routines feature some of the most difficult juggling patterns on the planet with clubs whose colours are synchronised to music and pulsate, jump and fade in and out of mesmerising colour palettes.

Councillor Jean Stretton, Cabinet Member for Town Centres, Culture and Tourism, said: “The Big Bang has a brilliant new entertainment line-up and it’s shaping up to be another smash hit with families.”

“The Gandini Jugglers have an international reputation. They’ve performed with Cirque du Soleil and are real crowd-pleasers.

“We’ll be confirming all the event details and final running order early next week and you can keep up to date with this on our website at http://www.oldham.gov.uk/ /bonfire

“You can also visit that page to enter our free prize draw – which closes on November 1 – offering one lucky youngster the chance to push the big button and launch a fireworks display that will be seen all across the borough.”

To help cater for parking demand, Oldham Council is offering the use of all its town centre car parks free of charge from 3pm on the day.

The public are advised to wear appropriate footwear, wrap up warm, arrive early and use public transport to avoid high demand on town centre car parking.

Local weather will be closely monitored in the run-up to the event. If conditions are thought to pose any threat to public safety then some aspects could be cancelled.

The following items – alcohol, sparklers, fireworks, gazebos and barbecues will not be permitted on the Oldham Edge site and will be confiscated. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

This event is designed to discourage smaller groups of people from holding unsupervised bonfires which can put extreme pressure on emergency services.

The local authority supports the Greater Manchester-wide Treacle campaign which is designed to prevent, tackle and protect against antisocial behaviour, criminal damage and reduce incidents and injuries during the Hallowe’en and Bonfire period.

Partner agencies involved include Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), Greater Manchester Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd, ten local authorities, Trading Standards, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Health and Safety Executive.
